2 Commonly Encountered Problems With Well Pumps

Ensuring that your home has a stable and clean supply of drinking water is essential for keeping your home a pleasant place to be. For those that lack access to a sewer and water system, a groundwater well may be the best option for meeting this need. Yet, these systems are more complex than many homeowners realize, and this can allow them to experience a wide range of problems and issues. The following questions and answers should help you to address some of the problems that your home’s well pump may encounter.

Why Is The Water From The Well Discolored?

A relatively common complaint is the water changing colors. Interestingly, this can happen gradually or you may simply notice the water is a drastically different color one day to the next. Unfortunately, this problem can be caused by numerous issues, and most of them are severe.

If the water has developed a reddish color, there is a good chance that rust has entered your system. In addition to being unpleasant to drink, this can contribute to mineral buildups and corrosion in your pipes. When the water appears to have soil in it, a damaged filter or ruptured seal are often to blame. To repair these problems, you will likely want to seek the services of a trained professional, because improper repairs can cause further issues for your well.

What Is Causing Some Rooms To Have Low Water Pressure?

Another frequent issue is a decrease in the water pressure to certain rooms in your home. Often, these rooms are at a higher elevation than the rest of the home. When you start to notice this problem occurring, your well pump is experiencing a mechanical malfunction, and this is preventing it from pushing enough water through the pipes to reach these areas of your home.

Unfortunately, this problem may require replacing the well pump to repair. This will depend on the amount and type of damage that occurred to the pump. You can reduce your chances of needing to pay this expense by having this problem inspected as soon as you notice a decrease in water pressure, because this may allow the contractor to repair the problem before it is able to worsen.

When your home’s well pump is malfunctioning, the quality of life inside your home can plummet. By understanding the causes of low pressure and discolored water, you will be more able to protect your home from these potential disruptions. 3 Green Advantages To Using Steel

If you are in the building, industrial and manufacturing industry, it is important that you use the best materials to get the job done, while remaining a positive steward of the environment. When this is your goal, steel is a wonderful metal that you should embrace. Through the years, steel has emerged as one of the best metals to use for construction, while also possessing a number of environmentally friendly attributes. If you want to learn why steel is an excellent material for your green friendly operation, read the following three environmental advantages.

#1: Steel Is Resilient And Easily Upgradeable

In terms of durability, you will notice that steel ages gracefully, without the toxic rust and decay that many metals quickly fall prey to. When these other metals begin to deteriorate, the environment around it suffers and becomes a liability. In the case of steel, not only will it hold up in prime condition for years, it is easily upgradeable, which means that you can add onto or renovate your structure without having to demolition large portions of it. This means that if your steel structured building needs an upgrade, less metal will go to waste and you won’t have to damage the environment through burning fuel and tearing up the earth in the process.

#2: Steel Is Weather Resistant And Thermally Efficient

One of the major benefits of building with steel is that it has a built in weather resilience that allows your building to stay cool in the summer and warm during the winter. You also are less likely to deal with structural issues due to heavy precipitation. This saves you money and energy year round, and allows you to use your HVAC system more efficiently, rather than having to compensate due to the lack of protection from the elements.

#3: Steel Is Easily Recyclable

The great thing about steel is that once it has run its course, you’ll have absolutely no problem getting rid of it in a positive manner. Industries have used steel for year and are highly versed in the most sophisticated recycling process, which ensures that your steel will take on a new life, rather than sit in a landfill. This allows steel fabricators to lower their production costs, which is good for the economy and environment as a whole.

Take these three green advantages to heart the next time you are deciding on building materials for your next construction. For more information, contact companies like Simko Industrial Fabricators.

New Business Owner? Why You Should Invest In An Access Control System

Starting a new business is a whirlwind of emotions. Excitement levels are high as you realize your dream of finally starting the business you have always dreamed about; you are eager to see how your targeted audience will receive your products or services (and you’re also nervous about the same thing.)

In addition to these emotions, there is another concern that you are probably facing as you are about to open your business; its security – and you have every right to worry, considering the staggering amount of businesses that are robbed each year.

Instead of leaving the fate of your business to chance and living in fear that it will be robbed, be proactive and take steps to ensure your security. One of the best ways you can do this is with an access control system.

Access Control Systems: What are They?

This type of system is designed to limit the access to a system or a physical environment. In the case of preventing your business from being robbed, an access control system would be used to monitor and control those who can physically enter your business, be it an entire building, a retail space in a mall or a suite in a professional building.

In order to gain access to your business, users would have to present the proper credentials before being permitted to enter. This could include entering a security code, swiping a key card, the reading of a fingerprint or any other number of methods of authentication.

Why You Should Utilize an Access Control System

There are a number of ways an access control system can benefit your business. Some of the biggest benefits include:

  • You can keep track of who enters your business. Every time the system is accessed (both successful attempts and unsuccessful attempts), it will be documented. This information will be valuable should employees have difficulty gaining entry to your business, or if there are numerous unsuccessful attempts to access your business by someone who is unauthorized.
  • You can set restrictions to certain locations or for certain days and times. For instance, if a cleaning crew comes three times a week in the early morning, you can restrict their access to those specific days and times instead of giving them a key that will allow them to enter at any time or day.
  • An access control system is more cost effective than keys. If a former employee fails to return a key, or a current employee’s key is lost or stolen, it’s not only expensive to replace the missing key, but it can also jeopardize the security of your business (which can also cost you a great deal of money.) If you have an access control system in place, you can simply deactivate lost and stolen ID badges and ID badges that have not been returned.

As a new business owner, an access control system is one of the best investments that you can make. To learn more, get in touch with a company like Murrell Burglar Alarms.

How To Avoid Cutting Yourself To Ribbons If You Work With Saws

If you have to work with or around dangerous machine parts such as the teeth of saw blades, safety is going to be a major concern for you. Here are a few recent technological innovations that make working with the business end of a saw much safer:

Finger–detecting Saws

One approach to safety is to work on the saw side. There are special saws out there now that can automatically detect when a finger or other part of your body is in the way of the blade. The way it does this is by detecting electrical conductivity.

Most things that you would cut with a blade, such as wood, don’t conduct electricity. But your finger does conduct. So, when the blade detects something that conducts electricity, it will stop immediately. The entire rig is destroyed in the process, but no harm will come to your appendages.

Obviously, this would only really work if you’re using saws that are primarily cutting something other than metal. Otherwise, you’ll need a different potential solution.

Diamond Gloves

Diamond is one of the hardest materials on earth, but traditionally it’s been difficult to work this material into something that needs to be as flexible as a glove. However, new fiber technology breakthroughs are changing this.

As a result of being able to work diamond into flexible gloves, it’s now much safer to work with saw blade teeth in any context whether it’s handling them while they are off, or working with them to cut objects.

Apparently, the technology is allowing for some of the most cut-resistant gloves ever made. Gloves made with this technology are recommended specifically for handling the incredibly sharp teeth for power saws. It’s this kind of combination of fine articulation and high cut resistance that makes the gloves perfect for the job.

Kevlar Gloves

Another good potential tech that can help with keeping you safe from saw teeth is gloves made of Kevlar. This material also has that important combination of flexibility and resistance to being cut.

The gloves can actually stop something as small as hypodermic syringes with its tight mesh. This means that it will also be effective at helping to resist any other very sharp machine part such as saw blades and saw teeth.

It’s a good idea to look for gloves that have an NIJ or other rating system that tells you exactly how much slash and puncture damage it can take per gram. That way you can then compare that to the sharpness rating for the saw blades to make sure you have enough protection. Air Compressor Maintenance Tips

If you use an air compressor regularly within your industry, maintenance should be done routinely in order to keep it working up to par. Failing to take precautionary steps in maintaining your air compressor could leave you with downtime that could possibly cost the business in lost sales. Here are some steps you can take to make sure the air compressor you use on the job stays working so you do not need to deal with unnecessary repair.

Familiarize Yourself With Parts

When you first start using an air compressor, or if you get a new one to do your job, familiarize yourself with all parts contained within the piece of equipment. The best way to do this is to take a look at the manual that comes with the unit. Reading a paragraph or two the first few weeks that you are getting used to the machine can help you realize what it needs to work properly. Take a look at any charts inside the manual that point out parts that should be cleaned or replaced on a regular schedule.

Clean Out The Compressor

Cleaning can keep any piece of machinery working longer, as it will remove any debris that could get embedded within the mechanisms needed to run the equipment. In an air compressor, there are a few portions to take special care to check and clean.

Clean the intake vents out every few weeks using a shop vacuum. These vents can become clogged with dust particles, sand paper, or other materials you use in your industry. If the vents stay clogged, the machine has a harder time working, putting strain on the unit in general. Routinely clean down the hoses using a mild detergent. This will help you find any areas where cracks may be prevalent so you can switch out the hoses with new ones.

Switch Out Parts

Change the air filter in your air compressor every six months to avoid a build up of dust inside. Failing to change out the filter every six months can cause your machine to have trouble drawing in air, making it overheat if it is overused. Change the gas in your fuel tank at least once a year so you do not have a sludgy build-up adhering to the interior walls of the tank. A wet/dry shop vacuum cleaner can be used to remove any gas remnants.

Tighten Bolts And Release Moisture

Tighten the nuts and bolts on your air compressor every week or two. With regular use, air compressors will shake, causing these hardware pieces to loosen. To keep your air compressor intact, tightening is recommended.

Release the moisture from your air compressor every few weeks, as well. When you use an air compressor, moisture will build up inside the tank. Release some of the air from your tank using the valve as listed in your manual. This will release the pressure of the air and will let out some of the moisture in the process. Tighten the valve again after you have let some of the moisture free.

How To Make Cement Magnets Using Ready-Mix Concrete

Do you have a bag of ready-made concrete that you’ve been storing for ages? If so, you don’t need to wait until you find a crack in your patio or driveway to use it. Instead, turn your concrete mix into unique cement magnets to brighten up your kitchen.

What You Need:

  • Concrete mix
  • Water
  • Bucket
  • Paint stick
  • Silicone ice cube tray — in shapes of your choice
  • 1-cup measuring cup
  • Magnets
  • Sandpaper
  • Colored chalk — in colors of your choice
  • Modge Podge
  • Foam paint brush

  1. Pour your ready-mix concrete and water into the bucket in the increments indicated on your package of concrete mix.
  2. Use the paint stick to stir the water and concrete mix until it’s completely mixed together. You should have a mixture that is a slightly thicker consistency than pancake batter.
  3. Set the silicone ice cube tray on the ground next to the bucket.
  4. Use the measuring cup to scoop to scoop the wet concrete out of the bucket. Then, pour the mixture into the compartments of your silicone ice cube tray. Repeat the process until each compartment is approximately half full.
  5. Pick up and set down your silicone ice cube tray a couple of times to level out the concrete mix.
  6. Look at the compartments to make sure they are all filled to approximately the same level. If not, use the measuring spoon to add a little more concrete where needed. Then, repeat the lifting and setting down process to level out the concrete in each compartment again. Repeat until the compartments look like they are filled to a similar level.
  7. Wait for the concrete to begin setting. When it starts to set, but is still pliable push a magnet into the center of each compartment. Make sure to leave the top part of the magnet poking out of the concrete mixture.
  8. Review the instructions on your package of ready-mix concrete to find the mixture’s setting time. If a setting time isn’t specifically indicated in the instructions, let the mixture set for at least eight hours.
  9. Once the concrete is fully set, pop the magnets out of the compartments.
  10. Use sandpaper to smooth out the bottom edges of each magnet.
  11. Set the magnets face up on the table, and use your colored chalk to decorate each one.
  12. Use the foam paint brush to cover each magnet with a coat of Modge Podge, according to the instructions on the bottle, to seal the chalk so that it doesn’t fade. Allow the Modge Podge to dry completely.

You can use ready-mix concrete in several ways. However, using your concrete mixture to create fun, themed magnets is a great weekend project that you can complete with your kids or by yourself — and it adds a unique touch to your kitchen.

If you need ready-mix cement supplies for a small project like this or a larger one, one company to contact is Robar Enterprises Inc.

Steps That Help You Build A Metal Shed On Your Property

If you have a lot of lawn equipment or tools, you may need extra room. This is where a metal shed comes in handy. To help you out with the fabrication process for one of these sheds, you can take these steps.

Shop at a Scrap Metal Recycling Yard

In order to find cheap pieces of metal for your shed, you can shop at a scrap metal recycling yard. These junk yards have affordable scrap metal, so you don’t have to break the bank when building your shed. These scrap metal yards have all sorts of scrap metal, which range in size.

You can search through all of the pieces of metal at your own liberty, or you can also receive assistance from one of the workers. Assistance will be provided, so you don’t have to lift large pieces of metal into your vehicle.

For more information, see http://www.puremetalrecycling.com/.

Wear Protective Gloves

When working with scrap metal to build your shed, you need to protect your hands with gloves. Otherwise, pieces of metal could be sharp and cut your hands. When looking for protective gloves, try to get ones that have penetration-resistant seams. These unique seams prevent sharp pieces of metal from cutting through the gloves and hurting your hands.

It’s also a good idea to buy protective gloves that have textured fingertips. That way, you don’t have to worry about pieces of metal falling out of your hands and potentially hitting your body. You also want gloves made from weatherproof materials so they don’t damage easily over the years.

Use a Magnetic Sweeper to Clean

After you are finished building, there may be a lot of scrap metal, screws and nails on the ground. Instead of picking these things up by hand and hurting yourself, all you have to do is use a magnetic sweeper.

These sweepers have a large magnet on the front, which attracts metal. So when you move the sweeper around your property, metal pieces are going to collect on the front. Thanks to large wheels on the side, manoeuvring these sweepers isn’t that difficult.

After you are finished collecting pieces of metal around your property, there’s a hand lever you can pull on. Doing this will let the metal pieces fall off into a trash can or dumpster.

Having a metal shed on your property is great because it gives you a secure place to store things like lawn equipment or tools for work. Thanks to the steps above, building one of these sheds is going to be more enjoyable.
